Sea Glass: The Collection

I mistakenly believed that I was one of a few people that collected beach or sea glass.  Was I ever wrong.  Thanks to Google, I now know there are clubs, groups, and entire protected beaches dedicated to this activity.  What it means to me?  I have a friend from home that collects beach glass, so I thought, what better way to feel close to home, but to have a friend on my morning walk with me, in spirit anyway.  The day we collected beach glass in Ontario, it was everywhere.  I have been in Nicaragua for almost 7 months now, living on a huge expanse of Ocean beach, and I have less than 20 pieces.  It has become a meditation like activity, walking on the beach looking for sea glass.  Every piece is a beautiful, one of a kind, rare find.  Worn down by time and environment, every specimen has weathered much before coming to shore and into my hands.......I am grateful every time I find one.

Inhale, Exhale, Inhale, Exhale and repeat........

The countdown to Paradise is on......19 days and every day goes faster and faster.  I am slowly checking things off my list one by one.  My flight is confirmed, travel insurance purchased, house rented and yesterday I completed the last major item of selling my car.  I am 8 days from my final day at work and even things here are winding down as the properties I manage slowly transition to their new managers. All this is giving me a lot of time to think and plan and obsess but it is so much more difficult because I am not sure what to expect.  The anxiety and fear of the unknown is setting in and as it does I focus on breathing and being present.......om I went to my last aerial yoga class on Monday and I hope to find a class in Nicaragua I can take as well.  Today I will go to Maha Pura Yoga for one last class and some goodbyes.  I hope once I get settled everyone can come visit and take in some classes on the beach in my new paradise.

UP, UP and AWAY!!!

My flight is booked.  I am going to Nicaragua from Sept 30, 2014-June 30, 2015.  I am very, very excited.....What an adventure.  This whole experience is just one first after another, although I expect they are not the firsts you are expecting.  It will be the first time I have been unemployed for more than one month since I started working at 14 and the first time travelling in a Spanish speaking country.  I have been working diligently since last December to prepare for this trip which in itself is another first since I am usually a bit of a procrastinator.  I am not even sure what other firsts await me but I am looking forward to all of them.   I have been studying Spanish with Rosetta Stone and I am more than halfway, although I am not sure I will finish the course before I leave.  People tell me it is best to be immersed in the language since the vocabulary is different, so a basic understanding is what I have been going for. I hav...

New Pilates Teacher Needs Experience!

I am pretty sure I have mentioned the life change I am on course to make in October........so here is the latest addition to further my plans and goals. This weekend I finished Pilates teacher training at KW Pilates (www.kwpilates.com).  It was taught by Stephen Filipowicz through The Physical Mind Institute. I found the course very in depth with a lot of time spent on the mechanics and muscles of the body and how they work for each of us.  Although I have taken Pilates as a student many times I found that I was only familiar with about 1/3 or 1/2 of the actual Pilates exercises.  I had never learned there names and thankfully didn't realize how many of them we all do in only modified forms.  The class was very structured and quite a change from classes I have taken for other modalities.  We were lead through some typical classes as well as classes styled by Stephen.  This is my favorite part of the program where you experience other peoples style. ...

Louise Hay and Me

That's what life is all about, isn't it!!?? This affirmation is just the kind you'd expect from Louise Hay.  Her book You Can Heal Your Life is an old friend that a good friend suggested years ago.  I found a lot of inspiration in that book.  I also enjoy her affirmations, why not turn one into a mantra?  Other notable books she wrote are The Power is Within, The Power is Within Affirmations and Empowering Women.  Notable, because I have read and enjoyed them while learning something new with every read.    I reallllllly like to read.......

More About Tea

I visited a tea store in Guelph, ON called The Bon The Place( www.teasoftheworld.ca ) last week and found a whole wall of teas......oolong, green, rooibus, herbal, detox, black and many other varieties.  I am getting away from coffee in the morning so I picked up a masala chai which is delicious.  I also picked up a sencha fruity that has hints of pineapple and feels a little tropical as a green tea.  While I was in the store the woman working there came by with a hot sample of milk oolong, a semi-fermented tea.  This was my first experience with semi or fermented teas and I really liked it.  Oolong tea has a multitude of health benefits including good dental health and bones, reducing obesity, control of diabetes and high cholesterol.  They believe is it the polyphenols in oolong.  Here is a link to the interesting information I found about this new tea in my repertoire ( http://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/beverage/health-benefits-of-oolong-t...

Yoga Teacher Training

In preparation for a major life change, I enrolled to complete yoga teacher certification at  Maha Pura Yoga ( www.carolynweatherson.com ) and a pilates certification course through The Physical Mind Institute ( www.themethodpilates.ca ).  I finished the first two weekend, 50 hour certification course thus beginning my new road to yoga and wellness teaching and getting my 200 hour certification as a yoga teacher..... There were a number of interesting items to this class.  I was completely shocked to sit in a room with 5 other women who have all traveled to various parts of the world including some similar to where I have been.  I don't normally find like minded woman in my daily life so this was a great start to the journey.  The class was interesting and well taught and the written information was well presented and thorough.   The practical portion was informative and supportive and I really enjoyed learning a couple of new meditations. One of the...

Relaxation Meditation

This is a favorite of mine that I use after a relaxing bath and anytime I can't sleep.....This is best done while laying down, arms comfortably at your sides, leg straight. Be sure that you are comfortable and inhale slow deep breaths allowing your breath to fill your belly, lower lungs, and upper lungs....on the exhale feeling your body release tension.  Focus on your breath as you empty your mind of other thoughts.  I like to put them in a cloud and watch them float away, you could put them in a drop of water and watch them drift away on a river or over a waterfall.....anything that works to let the thoughts go for now.  Continue to take a few more deep breaths as you let all the thoughts leave your mind and you are able to focus on your breath.  Now starting at you big toe begin to relax each muscle in your toes.......the ball of your foot......your ankle....heel.....calf muscles.....knee....thigh muscles....hips and tail bone....  Inhale slow breaths at ea...

My Cup O Tea

Over the years I have become a fan of tea.  My favourites are non-caffeine.  Green Teas, herbal teas and rooibus.  Almost any loose leaf tea will do.  I once got chamomile tea from a friends parents and it was really just a whole baggie of chamomile flowers.....it was from a place in Sarnia, Ontario but I am not sure exactly where.  It just seems so much fresher when you can recognize it by sight.... In June while on vacation I found a tea store selling hand tied leaves.  What a fantastic aroma of jasmine.  It is the Madame Butterfly tea by Capital Teas (www.capitalteas.com).  It was very expensive and I just couldn't afford it but they certainly had lots of great teas. My most recent vacation in Florida found me in the Spice and Tea Exchange (www.spiceandtea.com) where I purchased a small bag of loose leaf hazelnut cookie tea.  Ceylon black base so not my usual herbal but wonderful smell and tastes very rich.  An enjoyable tea....

2014: Adventure!

Last year I used the word "move" for the year and I moved in all kinds of directions, had a few accomplishments but mostly just made a lot of changes. Happy New Year! They say life is an adventure so this year I want to take that word to heart and have some big adventures.  I would like to pursue a trip to Nicaragua, learn spanish and complete yoga teacher training.  If I have a chance I would also like to get back to the salsa dancing and do some pilates training as well. I am going to focus on health and wellness this year.  Over the years I have dabbled with aromatherapy, yoga, meditation, reiki, organic gardening, gourmet local cooking and I receive great enjoyment from each and every one of these things and I am going to pursue a lifestyle.  I once had a friend who suggested I was a granola bunny......and maybe now it is finally time to see what that really means. I want my life to be grounded, grateful and by the ocean.

Old Friends and Inspiration

I recently spent time with an old friend who was visiting.  It really gave me a lot to think about especially with everything that has changed in my life this year. It made me realize that one of the things I have missed most over the last few years is travel.  I have been very restless and now it is time to get back to the things that are important to me in my life.  It seems sometimes those things change or fade when there is not just you to think about.  So in keeping with my goals for this year I have two more things I want to do and these will be my goals for next year before I travel to Nicaragua for a visit later next year. I am going to learn Spanish and become a yoga teacher.  These are two things I have wanted to do for more than a few years now.......There is no time like the present. Stick around there are going to be a lot more changes before I get done......Prepare for many new adventures!

And "Move" I have...whew

It has been quite a year so far. I have not come anywhere near writing here once a week. It has been a busy one so far. In February I moved forward by writing the last exam to get the professional designation I was going to school for. I accomplished something, finished it....have the letters RCM after my name. About Mid-march I moved from the job and position I was in and got another job that specifically deals with my new certification in another city. July left me single and staying with my parents. September has meant the end of my debt. Took me a couple years but diligence has paid off. I may finally be starting to learn to live within my means. I have certainly learned what I want in my life and how I do want to spend the money I make. I am now starting to gear my budget and expenses to the lifestyle I want to live. Now that fall is here and winter is not far off, it is time to find a permanent home for me....rent or own? Where? So many questions but at least I hav...

A weekend of extravagance in Toronto

Last weekend we (perhaps  I should clarify that we is my spouse and I who I will refer to often as MT since he is a large part of my life) went to Toronto for the weekend to use a gift certificate he had received for Oliver & Bonacini's.  We chose Biff's Bistro on Front St. and were treated to a delicious dinner.  The atmosphere was contemporary and not too loud but had there been people at the table right next to us perhaps a little cramped as the tables were pretty close together.  I had the seafood platter and it came with raw oysters, clams, mussels, a salmon pate, arctic char ceviche and 6 large shrimp with cocktail sauce.  It was heavenly and I ate every bite for $38.00.  MT had the escargot to start and the chicken dijonnaise and was disappointed that his chicken came bone in but it tasted good when I tried it.  The service was impeccable as my wine glass was never empty and I never touched the 1/2 liter and he even brought a wine chiller fo...

Webster and Toews Falls Walk

In an effort to keep moving we have started to walk the Bruce Trail with our handy Bruce Trail Reference, Maps and Trail Guide, Edition 27.  Our first official trek (we did inadvertently do other parts of the Trail) was 2 weekends ago.  We drove down to Dundas to Websters Falls and parked the car, then loaded up and started our walk.  Toews Falls was really nice and there are lots of great views along the way.  Communing with nature always brings peace to my life.  I would say we walked at least 10 km but we do not at this time have a device to measure that, however the portion that was the actual Bruce Trail was only 1 km or so.  It takes a number of side trails to make a loop back to your vehicle sometimes and sometimes you even get off the side trail accidently which most would consider being lost.  Although it is for exercise waterfalls are something we enjoy so with good weather it is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.  A beer along the ...

Welcome 2013!

Yesterday was the day when all the old is washed away and a new year brings a new beginning.  I have a number of goals for this year and they will be centered around one word.....MOVE! That doesn't mean I am going to physically move from where I live but who really knows what the universe holds.  It does mean that I am going to move forward with my career and relationship and all of my personal goals. I would like to write here once a week this year for the whole year.  I will provide book reviews and restaurant reviews (although these will be few and far between until I pay the Christmas bills). I am going to continue to improve the healthy eating that I have been working on slowly for the last couple of years and will share some of those experiences when I can. I am going to make positive affirmations daily and move towards a more positive outlook for my life and work. Today's affirmation for me is: Work is easy and fun for me!   I found this on the website...

Reservations Required!

I would have never found this little hole in the wall diner or even known there was such a thing if I hadn't been watching the Food Network and seen it on one of the shows.  Being it was in Hamilton and only 45 mins away I knew I would have to try it.  I was in the near neighbourhood this weekend and decided to stop by 486 James St. N..  We arrived at 4:30 maybe 5pm and were greeted by a smaller than expected kitschy seating area.  There were already no tables available and all were reserved so we bellied up to the bar which is actually 4 stools at a counter overlooking the bar, dessert and service area.  I was a little out of sorts that they store pre portioned, precooked pasta and extra gravy in the fridge out front for all to see.  All I could think is it must be a pretty small kitchen if that is where you store prepped food.  I had a virgin caesar and my guest a Coke (no fountain pop here).  We ordered the escargot to start and were unprepared...

Another Week

Monday Today I spent $5.21 on ingredients for the lunch I am making for my Tuesday lunch date.  A few weeks ago I made roasted cauliflower with brown butter and linguine.  I did not enjoy it at all and would not make it again.....but I turned the left over roasted cauliflower into soup and froze it.  It is absolutely delicious, I had a bowl for lunch today. Tuesday I bought a cup of tea for $1.77.  I made an asparagus goat cheese toss for my lunch date today.....wow yummy.. I found the recipe on the Canadian Living website.   I will definitely make that again and it was so easy to make. Wednesday NO spending day!  What I did do is finish the third book in The Hunger Games trilogy.  That means I read all three books since last Saturday.  It is a great series even for an adult.  I could hardly put it down.  Now I need to find something else to read.  Any suggestions? Thursday I got gas and took out $20 in cash....so $40 tota...

What a weekend!

Day 9,10 and 11 were a write off..... I had lunch out on Friday at the Downtown Diner for $8.50.  I wasn't overly excited about the burger I had, but the fries are like chip wagon fries with sea salt...they were yummy and I would have them again.  Apparently the pork sliders are their thing so I will have to try those one day and see.  I got gas for $30.00.  Saturday was the day my niece stayed over.  We got a movie that I had a gift certificate for that was no cost to me.  We ate at the Honest Lawyer which has just opened.  I had the full coverage burger and it was tasty although I didn't get a lot of flavor from the caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms, they had sea salt on the fries as well but this time coarse sea salt like you would get on a pretzel.  It was so enjoyable I dipped the fries in mayonnaise and then whatever little pieces of salt I could find on my plate.  She had the mini burgers and enjoyed 2 of them and some of my...

Week 2: Monday-Thursday

Day 5:  NO spending day.  It was a quiet Monday. Day 6:  I spent approx $6.00 to fill a prescription. I should probably update you on another goal I had for this year.  I have been trying to make it to the gym twice a week since January.  It doesn't seem like a big goal but some weeks it is tough. Truthfully I haven't made it even once in the last  two weeks but I got back on track today with a bootcamp class at the YMCA I go to.  Although I am not noticing much difference in my weight or how I look I have noticed a substantial difference in how I feel......GREAT!  I am also hoping it will translate into an improved softball season. I may never be in the shape I was at 20 again but I can certainly try and be closer than I am now. Today was also lunch date day.....my coworker brought pulled pork sandwiches with carrot stick and cherry tomatoes.  She also made chocolate peanut butter squares....ummm delicious.  I will have to get that ...
